Abstract
The Barzaz Bro-Leon is a heterogeneous collection of more than 1100 documents - mainly Breton songs - collected by Jean-marie Perrot around 1906. Its originality comes from the fact that this priest organized a competition in a local newspaper, inviting singers to write down and send him their traditional repertoire. In this way, he obtained a great number of songs without recourse to personal investigations by a single collector. Contrary to the other know collections, in which the collectors select the singers and songs based on teh repertoire they were interested in, the Barzaz Bro-Leon reveals the taste and choice of the performers : they sent the songs that they considered as most likely to win prizes at the competition. The great difference in the results obtained through each approach invites us to think about the methods and sources used by ethnologists to study folksongs, in Brittany or elsewhere.
